Melbourne is one of the hottest cities in Australia right now, and it is no wonder why! Melbourne has everything to offer new parents and newborn photographers alike. From amazing parks and landmarks to adorable shops and cafes, there are endless opportunities for you to create stunning imagery of your little ones. Newborn photography is growing in popularity in Melbourne as more parents are choosing to have a keepsake photo of their newborn baby. However, some safety tips must be kept in mind while doing newborn photography in Melbourne so everyone can be safe, including you and your model baby!

Get the baby’s consent.

When photographing a newborn, it’s important to remember that you are at the mercy of their mood. A baby should be comfortable with everyone involved in the shoot, not just the photographer. The pose should be something they can hold for some time without getting tired or distressed. The environment should work for babies; somewhere quiet without distractions like loud noises or other people around might work best. The camera and lens should not feel too heavy; use lighter equipment if possible (or have someone else hold it).

Make sure you have a spotter around all the time.

The second safety tip is to ensure that you have a spotter around all the time. This person should be able to respond quickly and keep your newborn safe and calm. It’s also important that your camera assistant has some knowledge of how to handle an infant in case of an emergency.

Having someone who knows CPR nearby is helpful and could mean the difference between life and death if something were to go wrong at any given moment. A first aid kit with basic bandages, gauze pads and other medical supplies can also come in handy if there is ever an issue with bleeding or injury on location during a shoot!

Employ a safe posing method

The first thing to consider when choosing a posing method is safety. Babies are fragile, and you want to ensure they’re comfortable and safe while in your hands. You may find that one of the following posing methods works best for you:

  • Newborns should be posed with their heads and neck supported in a neutral position, with their legs bent at the knees or feet flat on the floor. This can be achieved by placing one hand under their thighs and another under their shoulders or wrapping them up in fabric (such as a receiving blanket).
  • Older babies with good head control should be able to sit upright on their own without support; however, it’s still important for parents or assistants to keep an eye on them during photography sessions, so they don’t topple over unexpectedly!

For parents looking to take photos of their newborns at home during playtime sessions or family get-togethers rather than formal portraits by professional photographers.

Have sanitised equipment and blankets on hand

It is important to have sanitised equipment and blankets on hand during newborn photography. You should have at least two if you plan to use the same blanket in multiple photos. This will ensure that your clients are not exposed to harmful bacteria or germs. Make sure the blankets are clean, freshly laundered and free from stains before using them for the shoot.

Go for natural lighting whenever possible.

Natural light is the best for newborn photography. Natural light is free, it’s easy to use, and it isn’t harsh. Natural daylight provides great skin tones, so you can capture your subject with a nice and pure look.

It is important to be aware of the safety precautions photographers should follow while taking newborn photography in Melbourne. It’s an art form and a skill that develops with time and practice. You don’t need special equipment or a fancy camera to start; just a little creativity and patience will go a long way when photographing babies.
